The belt retractor comprises a belt spool (12) rotatable in a frame (10), and a braking device (22) with a chamber (20) filled with magneto-rheological fluid and in which is installed a braking element (16). A pawl (26) is installed on the braking element and can engage with ratchet teeth (27) constructed in the chamber. The pawl is acted upon by a spring in the neutral position in which it does not engage with the ratchet teeth, but engages with the teeth by the flow resistance of the magneto-rheological fluid.
