The hoist chain has D-section links with the transition between the flanks (2,3) and the outer planar bearing surfaces of the links comprising rounded areas of radius r. The value r is between point two and point four times the separation (A) between the chain link flanks. The links can have flattened plastically deformable zones between the ends.
