New fluorinated biphenyl compounds, useful for the production of liquid crystalline media

Fluorinated biphenyl compounds (I) are new. Fluorinated biphenyl compound of formula (I) are new: X = F, Cl, CN, SF5, NCS, halogenated 1-8C alkyl optionally having at least one CH2 group replaced by -O- or -CH=CH such that O- atoms are not directly bonded to each other; and L<1>-L<3> = H or F. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a liquid crystalline medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive or negative dielectric anisotropy containing at least one compound of formula (I); and (2) an electrooptical liquid crystal display device containing the liquid crystalline medium.
