PURPOSE: A method and a device for electronically controlling the spatial location of charged molecules are provided which are useful in molecular biological reactions, such as nucleic acid hybridizations, nucleic acid amplification, sample preparation, antibody/antigen reactions, clinical diagnostics, and biopolymer synthesis. CONSTITUTION: A method of controlling the spatial location of charged molecules in a reaction unit having a central electrode surrounded by a plurality of outer electrodes on a substrate, wherein the unit being filled with medium for providing frictional resistance to the motion of the molecules, comprises the steps of: (1) placing a charged molecule in the reaction unit; (2) applying predetermined magnitudes of the first voltages to the central electrode and a set of at least one outer electrode selected from a plurality of outer electrodes to generate an electric field; and (3) applying predetermined magnitudes of the second voltages to the central electrode and a set of at least one outer electrode selected from a plurality of outer electrodes to rotate the electric field for controlling the spatial location of the charged molecules, wherein the net charge, generated by the voltage applied to the selected electrodes, across the unit is maintained at zero.
