The method for measuring the local ground contours for use in an earth-moving machine so that an operating tool of the machine can be set at a correct height. According to the method the contours (3, 4, 5) of the ground in an approach direction are determined and the height of the earth moving tools set accordingly so that the earth can be smoothed out with ridges (4) and dips (5) removed. The invention also relates to a corresponding device for implementation of the inventive method that uses a microwave transmitter and receiver arrangement for determining the contours of the ground.
