An apparatus for measuring blade tip clearance in a gas turbine. The apparatus includes an ultrasonic sensor for measuring a distance between a stator shroud surface and a position of the ultrasonic sensor and providing a first signal indicative thereof; a radio frequency sensor for measuring a distance between rotating blade tips of the gas turbine and a position of the radio frequency sensor and providing a second signal indicative thereof; and a processor for receiving and processing said first and second signals to determine blade tip clearance of the gas turbine. The apparatus may also be used to measure blade tip clearances in a steam turbine, or a compressor.
