The monitoring method has a test signal sequence supplied to the transmission channel (4) by the data transmitter (3) in defined test phases, with variation of the signal level and evaluation at the data receiver (5) of the detectable parts of the test signal sequence, for providing a display signal indicating the quality of the transmission path. The signal level is increased over an interval and the system reserve is provided from the relative amount of the maximum reception level at which the threshold of a reception discriminator is reached.
