An apparatus for anaerobic treatment of an organic waste or waste water which is an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket treatment apparatus having an anaerobic treatment vessel and a multi-stage gas-solid separator section formed by a plurality of baffles disposed within the treatment vessel, characterized in that each baffle occupies 1/2 or more of a cross-sectional area of the treatment vessel and has a means for supplying a deforming agent. The above apparatus allows, in a multi-stage UASB apparatus which does not interfere the good flow of sludge particles, i.e., the good contact of sludge particles with organic substances and thus uses all of sludge particles effectively for the treatment, the recovery with stability of a gas generated within a GSS section, which leads to the achievement of a stable waste water treatment even at a high COD load.
