Encoders are interconnected so that quantized differential signals from transformation signals are subjected to entropic coding in one or more encoders instead of entropic coding of quantized transformation signals (L1). Output signals (D1) are received when quantized at different levels of resolution and subjected to entropic encoding. Quantizing (Q1) and entropic encoding (EC1) take place for the difference between a transformation signal (X1) before associated quantizing and a transformation signal for a lower quality stage after associated quantizing.
