The system has a remote starting unit (34) connected to a vehicle power plant (30). A transmitter actuates the remote starting unit to start the vehicle power plant. A vehicle hazard switch (50) is located in a passenger compartment of the vehicle and the switch allows starting and shutting off of the vehicle power plant by the transmitter based on the position of the switch. An Independent claim is also included for a method for remotely starting and shutting off a vehicle.
