The heater (10) has a control device (22) connected to a voltage supply line (32) of a motor vehicle battery (34) and adapted to detect a voltage characteristic of it. The device determines the information about when the engine is completely started depending upon the characteristic. The determination is made when the characteristic shows a fluctuation of its initial voltage value that charges the battery. An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating an auxiliary motor vehicle heater.
