Method for testing the leak rate of a test item (1) by comparison with a reference container (3) has the following steps: connection of the test container to the reference container via a connection device (2) with a differential pressure sensor; application of a set pressure to the test container, the pressure of which is measured with an absolute pressure sensor; shutting off of the applied pressure; connection of reference and test containers; and monitoring of pressure over time. An Independent claim is made for a device for testing the leak rate of a container.
