STEAM TURBINE INLET AND METHOD FOR ENHANCING STEAM TURBINE INLET

PURPOSE: A steam turbine inlet and a method for enhancing the steam turbine inlet are provided to secure a uniform mass flow at substantially uniform speed in radially inward and axial directions. CONSTITUTION: A steam inlet for a steam turbine comprises a generally annular casing(10,12) and a pair of steam inlet ports(20) spaced from one another about the casing for receiving steam and transmitting steam into the chamber. The casing has an outer surrounding peripheral wall(24); a pair of axially spaced side walls(26) extending inwardly to define a generally annular chamber(22) within the casing; at least one generally annular steam outlet(18) disposed to a generally central position of the casing in communication with the chamber for flowing steam axially outwardly through the outlet into the first stage of the turbine. The chamber has a substantially progressive reduction in cross-sectional area in a generally circumferential direction away from the steam inlet ports to provide a substantially uniform flow of steam about the chamber in a generally radially inward direction.
