The writing system may include an Nd:YAG-laser (2), sending a beam of light through dichroic mirrors (10,12) to divert light into two scanning units (4). Each scanning unit has an objective lens (14). The axes of the scanning units are at right-angles to the axis of the laser. There are code readers (20) in line with the scanning units, on the opposite sides of the mirrors.
