The cooler is a closed, jacketed (4) container (6) with supply and off take lines (2, 3) for the gas. The interspace is filled with a CO2 absorption packing (11). The container is filled with a paraffin wax or a salt, to act as coolant. The coolant is embedded in a thermally-conductive material (8) with a melting temperature in the range 30-40 deg C at normal pressure. Absorption heat arising in the jacket is conducted into the container and the respiration gas flows around the jacket and container. The apparatus protects breathing, or is part of apparatus for anaesthesia. The jacketed container has a wick leading to a respiration bag. Any condensed water is evaporated from an extended, large-area fleece at the container, which is connected to the wick, and causes additional cooling.
