A crucible for melting a rare earth element alloy containing, as primary cpmponents, one or more selected from rare earth element oxides including Y<sb>2</sb>O<sb>3</sb> and at least one of Al<sb>2</sb>O<sb>3 </sb>and Al<sb>2</sb>TiO<sb>5</sb>, characterized in that it is prepared trough the firing at 500 to 1800°C in the case of that containing no Al<sb>2</sb>TiO<sb>5</sb> or at 1000 to 1700°C in the case of that containing no Al<sb>2</sb>TiO<sb>5</sb>, that the rare earth element oxide is distributed in a finer part of a material for the firing having a particle diameter of 0.5 mm or less in a percentage higher than that of a coarser part of the material having a particle diameter of greater than 0.5 mm, and that it contains substantially no reaction products of the above rare earth element oxide with the at least one of Al<sb>2</sb>O<sb>3 </sb>and Al<sb>2</sb>TiO<sb>5</sb>; and a rare earth element alloy produced by the use of the crucible.
