The fireplace insert (2) has a burner section (3) to receive a liquid fuel and which has a top wall with an opening on the upper side. A retaining element which at least partially covers the top wall is installed on the upper side of the burner section, and a movable cover section is installed between the fixed top wall and retaining element so that the opening in the top wall can be partially or wholly closed. The movable cover section has at least one holding element to effect the cover section's movement.
