The tensioner includes a tension piston (4) defining a pressurised oil chamber (3) containing a cylindrical insert (10) in the piston on the traction means side between the compression spring (6) and a chamber base (13) of the tension piston as a piston valve (14) resiliently supported separately against the chamber base. This piston valve controls an outlet opening (16) set in the wall (15) of the tension piston defining the pressurised oil chamber transversely to the direction of movement of same. The outlet opening is connected to a ring chamber (17) which is between the tension piston and socket part (2) and which adjoins the first leakage gap (7) on the traction means side.
