OPTICAL FUNCTIONAL MATERIAL EMPLOYING RARE EARTH COMPLEX AND LIGHT EMITTING DEVICE

A white light emitting device having high color rendering properties and a light emitting device emitting light of an arbitrary color produced through combination of a semiconductor light emitting device and a transparent wavelength conversion media covering it. A first complex having general structural formulas I-VII and a central ion M of Eu and a second complex having similar general structural formulas I-VII and a central ion M of Tb are mixed together into a solid carrier, e.g. transparent plastic, and combined with a semiconductor light emitting device emitting blue light in the excitation band of Eu and Tb. A transparent fixed carrier layer containing the first complex and a transparent fixed carrier layer containing the second complex may be laid in layers. A light emitting device emitting light of an arbitrary color can be obtained by regulating the emission intensities of red light from the transparent fixed carrier containing the first complex, green light from the transparent fixed carrier containing the second complex, and blue light from the semiconductor light emitting device.
