The protection comprises a two-part housing (4) with a socket (2) and an inserted cap (3). Through the socket pass two terminals (5,6) with a flat, rectangular cross-section outside of the housing, lying in a common first plane. Inside the housing a PTC element (11) is coupled to the terminals. Preferably, the housing and terminals are so formed as to permit plugging into a flat fuse socket. The PTC element is also flat and located in a second plane (E2).
