Tampon (30), has an insertion end (32), a recovery end (34), a recovery tape (35) and a solid core. Solid core is made of highly compressed fibrous material. Partially uncompressed longitudinal ribs (40) are extended from core between insertion and recovery ends. The ribs are separated from each other by longitudinal grooves. The longitudinal ribs and longitudinal grooves are spirally shaped. A tampon has an insertion end, a recovery end, a recovery tape and a solid core. The solid core is made of highly compressed fibrous material which is compressed radially with respect to the tampon axis. Partially uncompressed longitudinal ribs are extended from the core radially outward at equal circumferential angle intervals between insertion and the recovery ends. The ribs are separated from each other by longitudinal grooves. The longitudinal ribs and longitudinal grooves are spirally shaped. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for producing a tampon.
