PURPOSE: A method for controlling knock of an automobile engine is provided to optimize durability of the engine. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of: a first control step(S100,S110,S120,S130,S140,S150,S160,S170) determining knock occurs continuously, if an area in which ignition timing is delayed under reference value exists, based on number of occurrence, and repeatedly tardily controlling ignition timing by fixed value over the whole area until ignition timing is not delayed under the reference value when knock occurs at intervals shorter than reference value frequently over reference frequency; and a second control step(S210,S220,S230,S240,S250) estimating RON(Research Octane Number) of fuel currently used after reference time has passed while number of tardy control is over reference value, when ignition timing is returned to an area over the reference value by the first control step, warning a driver, and returning ignition time to the original state. The method actively controls ignition timing to prevent damage of an engine due to extreme knock even when gasoline with low octane value is injected.
