In a damper of the type in which a doubleended piston is reciprocable in a cylinder 11 (Fig. 6) closed at each end, valves 38 (Fig. 8) controlling the passage of liquid between opposite ends of the cylinder are arranged in a separate member or housing 30 which is mounted in a recuperation chamber 15 in the body of the damper. The housing is secured to the base of the chamber 15 by a bolt 31 so that two bores 34 register with respective bores 33 leading to opposite ends of the cylinder 11. Each bore 34 intersects a respective blind bore 37 in which one of the valves 38 is mounted. The loading of the valve is adjusted by rotation of a plug 40 which is locked in position by a plate 43. The bores 37 are connected by passages 41, 42. A needle valve (not shown) controls a bleed passage 45a connecting the passages 41, 42. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, a housing 17 is secured by bolts 18 to the base of the chamber 15. Recesses 19 surrounding the bolts 18 open into respective blind bores 21 housing valves 23. Each recess 19 registers with a recess in the damper body, which is connected by an inclined passage with one or other end of the cylinder. The bores 21 are connected by a needle-valve-controlled bleed passage 27. Alternatively a separate controlled bleedpassage may be provided between each bore 21 and the chamber 15.</p> |
