PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the water, stain and wear resistances of a photographic element. SOLUTION: A photographic element is provided which comprises (a) a support, (b) at least one silver halide emulsion layer superposed on one face of the support and (c) a protective overcoat superposed on the silver halide emulsion layer, formed from a coating composition comprising (i) 30-95 mass% (based on the mass of the solid content) particulate water-dispersible polymer having <500 nm average particle size and -40 to +80 deg.C Tg (glass transition temperature), (ii) 4.5-69.6 mass% (based on the mass of the solid content) water- soluble polymer and (iii) 0.50-20 mass% (based on the mass of the solid content) compound including a block copolymer chain of at least one of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, having at least 0.54 g/m<2> (50 mg/ft<2> ) lay-down and permeable to a processing solution.
