NONVOLATILE RECORDING MEDIUM, METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME, AND METHOD FOR RECORDING AND READING INFORMATION USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonvolatile recording medium which has excellent environmental stability and memory preservability and which can be manufactured at a low cost, and to provide a method for manufacturing the medium, and a method for recording and reading information using the medium. SOLUTION: The nonvolatile recording medium has a pair of substrates 10 and 20 facing each other, a liquid crystal layer 30 presenting a nematic phase formed between the pair of substrates 10 and 20, a pair of electrode layers 12 and 22 provided on the sides of the liquid crystal layer 30 of the pair of substrates 10 and 20, and a pair of alignment layers 16 and 26 provided on both of the sides of the liquid crystal layer 30. The pair of alignment layers 16 and 26 have a first alignment regulation area R1 and a second alignment regulation area R2 imparted with alignment regulation force giving a pre-tilt angle to the liquid crystal molecule 31 of the liquid crystal layer 30. The per-tilt angle of the liquid crystal molecule 31 in the second orientation regulation area R2 is larger than that of the liquid crystal molecule 31 in the first alignment regulation area R1.
