PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition capable of being driven at a low temperature when used in a bistable liquid crystal display element and to provide a bistable liquid crystal display element using the composition. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition used contains optically active compounds represented by formulae (I), (II), and (III) (wherein R<1> to R<4> are each a 1-10C alkyl or alkoxyl or a 2-10C alkenyl or alkenyloxy; A, B, D, E, and G are each 1,4-phenylene, naphthalene-2,6-diyl, phenanthrene-2,7-diyl, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl, trans-1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, pyridine-2,5-diyl, or the like; Z<1> to Z<4> are each a single bond, -COO-, -OCO-, -C≡C-, or the like; m and n are each 0, 1 or 2; p is 0 or 1; X<1> to X<4> are each H or F; and Y<1> is -CH, -CF3 , -F, or the like, provided that at least one of R<4> , Z<3> , and Z<4> is an optically active group).
