PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which can exhibit superior effects on video presentation power and adaptivity to a use environment. SOLUTION: The projection type display device 1 has a light source 2, a rod lens 4 which makes uniform the illumination distribution of the light emitted by the light source 2, a liquid crystal light valve 7 which modulates the light projected from the rod lens 4, and a projection lens 8 which projects the light modulated by the liquid crystal light valve 7. A liquid crystal element 5 for dimming which is able to vary transmittance with locations is provided on the projection side of the rod lens 4 and controlled according to external information such as a video signal so that the quantity of light can be adjusted with locations on a screen.
