PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymerization catalyst not having ortho substituents on the diimine, because the incorporation of monomers having more steric demand than ethene is impeded by large substituents in the ortho position. SOLUTION: A diimine-transition metal compound having aryl groups with one or more electron-attracting substituents is represented by formula (1) (wherein M is a transition metal such as nickel; R<1> , R<2> , R<3> , R<4> , R<5> and R<6> are each an electron-attractive substituent group, hydrogen, an alkyl group or the like, wherein at least one of these groups is an electron-attractive substituent group; R<7> , R<8> , R<9> and R<10> are each hydrogen, a halogen, an alkyl group or the like, wherein at least two of these groups are hydrogen or a halogen; R<11> and R<12> are each hydrogen, a halogen, an alkyl group or the like).
