PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively controlling pests in a pond for culturing fishes or the like in a state safe for human bodies at a low cost without polluting environments, and to provide a method for effectively improving the water quality of a lake, a pond, a river, a pond in a golf course, a reservoir such as a pool, or the like, in a state safe for human bodies at a low cost without polluting environments by the extermination of water bloom. SOLUTION: This method for controlling the pests is characterized by using an inorganic antimicrobial agent containing at least one selected from metal ions consisting of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, preferably the antimicrobial agent carried on a porous substance. Thereby, the control of the pests and the improvement of the water quality can effectively be achieved by the inexpensive means which is safe for human bodies and hardly gives loads to environments.
