PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high electron transfer characteristics, thermal stability, fluorescence, luminance and stability. SOLUTION: An electroluminescent element is used which is characterized in that it has an anode, a cathode, and at least one organic layer installed between these electrodes and made of a metal complex having a ligand comprising a compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein X is O, S or NH; Y is O, carbonyl or methylene; m is an integer of 1 to 4; R1 is H, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, or an aliphatic ring; and R2 , R3 , R4 and R5 may be the same or different and are each a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, a halogen atom, H or an aromatic ring).
