PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially suitable method for producing a 2- hydroxymethyl-4-oxo-1,3-dioxolane derivative which is important as a medicinal intermediate. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2-hydroxymethyl-4-oxo-1,3- dioxolane derivative is provided by using hydroxyacetaldehyde dialkylacetals, etc., as equivalents to hydroxyacetoaldehyde having a stability and as starting materials, and performing a reaction with glycolic acid or its derivative in an acidic reaction condition.
