PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device reliably operating for various kinds of paper sheet at a high, paper-loosening speed. SOLUTION: The invention relates to a method and the device for loosening a paper sheet from a sheet stack 10. At least one squeezer 19 acts on the uppermost paper sheet 14 in the sheet stack, and the squeezer tenses or bends the uppermost paper sheet 14. An intermediate space is thereby formed between the uppermost paper sheet and the underlying, second paper sheet. A separation tongue 30 is inserted in the intermediate space, thereby enabling the uppermost sheet 14 to be drawn by a transport device 36.
