A hydraulic setting composition is provided. The composition when set has improved water absorption properties. The composition contains a hydraulically setting inorganic material such as calcium sulfate and an auxiliary of the formula A(-X[-CH2]p-ZY)k where A can be a linear or branched C1-24 alkyl group, a linear or branched C2-24 alkenyl group each of which can be unsubstituted or substituted with 1 to 4 OH group, C6-24 aryl group and alkyl substituted C6-24 aryl groups each; having a valence K, Z is SO3 or COO-, Y is a proton, a metal ion or ammonium, P is from 1 to 30 and X is identical or different and can bewhere n is from 0-30, m is from 2 to 8, K is from 1 to 4, q is from 1-10, L is O, S or UR3, R2 and R3 are identical or different, linear or branched C1-12 alkyl or a polymer having a molecular weight (Mn) of at least 300 and contains anionic, cationic or anionic and cationic monomer units.
