PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of optimally rearranging a stand-by tool stored in a tool magazine of a machine tool in each of machining processes. SOLUTION: In an automatic tool exchanger for a machine tool, the stand-by tools T1, T3, T6, T10 stored in the tool magazine 1 can be freely rearranged by using a NC program for giving operational instructions to call the tools to exchange stand-by positions on a spindle and the magazine, exchange storage information about two called tools and return the called tools to the tool magazine.
