PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a conventional secondary storage tank for separating mixed sludge into solid and liquid requires a considerable running cost and maintenance cost and effect of the separation is very little in comparison with the cost. SOLUTION: In treating excreta in a cattle stall for separating the solids from the liquid in a separation tank, the sludge which is a mixture of excreta, floor straw, fodder and water is separated by using a separation tank constituted by suitably stretching drains for discharging separated liquid to a level lower than a floor face of the separation tank around the floor face of the separation tank used in a stage for separating the solids from the liquid and installing pipes having many holes along the drains in the drains with locating the upper part of the pipe to be sufficiently lower than the floor face, while, in a space between the pipes and the drains, filling and piling gravel and sand having particle size relatively larger than a hole size of the holes opened in the pipes to a level higher than that of the floor face of the separation tank.
