PURPOSE: To provide an operating fluid containing a liquid crystal composition having an electrorheological effect and capable of transferring by a drawing force between electrostatics as an active ingredient, excellent in driving force and viscosity increasing effects, and useful for an actuator not requiring a power source. CONSTITUTION: This operating fluid for an actuator comprises a liquid crystal composition manifesting an electrorheological effect by orienting on the application of an electric field and capable of transferring by a drawing force between electrostatics as an active ingredient, and the composition contains (A) nematic liquid crystal, and/or (B) smectic liquid crystal and/or (C) a low molecular liquid crystal composition composed of a strong dielectric liquid crystal component. Furthermore, it is preferable that the previously mentioned liquid crystal composition contains a high molecular liquid crystal composition. Also, e.g. an azo-based liquid crystal, a phenylbezoate-based liquid crystal are cited as the low molecular liquid crystal. A lyotropic liquid crystal such as an aromatic polyamide-based polymer is cited as the high molecular liquid crystal. |
