PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically and in detail classify a plurality of documents and present the classification system and the summary of the respective classified documents to an operator in an easy style. SOLUTION: A document classifying engine such as 'CB Classifier', which classifies a plurality of given documents into a plurality of categories according to a vector space method, is called recursively, whereby as shown in Fig. 4, multi-stage document classification is performed, in which a group of documents classified into the categories as a preceding class are further classified into a plurality of categories by a subsequent classification. The hierarchical relation of the categories used in the respective stages are displayed like a tree on a screen, and when the category at the terminal of the tree is specified, a list of documents classified into the categories is displayed on the screen. When one document is classified to overlap a plurality of categories at the terminal, all classifying paths, that is, all routes on the tree for reaching the concerned document are jointly displayed.
