PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high brightness and high image quality by stabilizing operation of a plasma display device. SOLUTION: One substrate of a panel is formed with 1st and 2nd electrodes thereon corresponding to each scanning line, and the other substrate is formed with a 3rd electrode thereon corresponding to each data line. An image for one field is displayed by sequentially writing and maintaining data in the crossing parts of each scanning line and each data line by driving the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd electrodes. In order to write and maintain multi-gradation data consisting of a plurality of weighted bits, at least one field is divided into a plurality of sub-fields corresponding to a plurality of the bits. A driving signal to be applied for maintaining the bits allocated in at least one sub-field is controlled so that the frequency is low at the beginning and high later. Further, the voltage may be controlled high first, and may be controlled low later.
