PURPOSE: A color image storage device for vehicles is provided to store video information about an accident generated in a vehicle to utilize the video information as a decisive proof of the accident. CONSTITUTION: A color image storage device for vehicles includes a monitoring camera(20) for photographing the image of the inside of a vehicle, a video input unit(31) for receiving the output video signal of the monitoring camera, a decoder(32) for converting the video signal stabilized by the video input unit into a digital signal and generating horizontal and vertical synchronous signals, and a video DSP(33) for encoding and compressing the digital signal. The device further includes a microcomputer(36) for generating a control signal to temporarily store the compressed video signal in the first memory(34) and finally store the signal in the second memory(35), an encoder(37) for converting the video signal decoded and decompressed by the video DSP into an analog signal and mixing the analog video signal with the horizontal and vertical synchronous signals to generate a composite signal, a segment display(38) for, when the second memory reaches its capacitance limit, displaying it, an on-screen-display(40) for displaying a screen on which character data for indicating a reproduction operation is output and a password, a vehicle ID, a driver's name are set, changed and canceled, a video output unit(39) for processing a final video signal obtained by overlaying the composite signal with the character data, and a display(50) for displaying the final video signal.
