Production of polysaccharide betainates (I) comprises either: (a) reacting a polysaccharide with a dialkylamino carboxylic acid (II) in the presence of an activator and quaternizing the resulting ester; or (b) reacting a polysaccharide with a trialkylammonio carboxylic acid (III) in the presence of an activator and a polar aprotic solvent. Production of polysaccharide betainates of formula (I) comprises either: (a) reacting a polysaccharide with a dialkylamino carboxylic acid of formula (II) in the presence of an activator and quaternizing the resulting ester; or (b) reacting a polysaccharide with a trialkylammonio carboxylic acid of formula (III) in the presence of an activator and a polar aprotic solvent: R1-R3 = (un)saturated linear or branched 1-30C hydrocarbyl optionally interrupted by heteroatoms (N, O and S) and/or optionally substituted with OH, halo and/or 6-22C aryl; A = (un)saturated linear or branched 1-22C hydrocarbylene optionally interrupted by heteroatoms (N, O and S) and/or optionally substituted with OH; X = an anion; Y = a polysaccharide. Independent claims are also included for: (1) (1) compounds (I) other than those where Y is starch, A is methylene and R1-R3 are methyl; (2) (2) a composition comprising at least one compound as in (1) in a cosmetically or dermatologically acceptable medium; (3) (3) cosmetic treatment of a keratinic substrate selected fom skin, scalp, hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, nails and mucosa by applying the composition of (2) to the substrate. |
