PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device for which efficient countermeasure are taken against smear. SOLUTION: The device has an image pickup element 105, a photographing surface illuminance adjusting means 103 for adjusting the illuminance of an object image with respect to the photographing surface of the element 105, exposure control means 112, 117, and a smear detecting means 112a for detecting the generation of smears concerning to photographing signals on the basis of output of the element 105. The means 112, 117 are constituted so as to lower the illuminance of the object image by the means 113 when the means 112a detects the generation of smears in a moving image state.
