Method for testing the functioning of an electrical power stage (4) and for detection of a short-circuit in the power stage relative to the power supply voltage or relative to earth and for detection a cable breakage. The electrical power stage or load is a switch controlled by a microcomputer (1) via a command bus (6). The power stage is linked to a digital diagnostic port (12) of the microcomputer and fault states are recognized by reading of the states of the diagnostic port and be reading the charge state of a memory element (7). The invention also relates to a corresponding circuit for implementation of the inventive method.
