PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coin identification system low in cost and capable of deciding on the authenticity of a coin without necessitating a complicated optical system or a sophisticated image processing technique. SOLUTION: The system has a passage D for conveying the object coin kept in rotation, an LED 15 for projecting a beam with its optical axis roughly orthogonally intersecting the passage D, a slit 18a positioned in between the LED 15 and the passage D for forming an optical flux extending in a certain direction, a light receiving device 16 having a receiving optical axis inclined relative to the projected optical axis in the direction of the length of the slit 18a and receiving reflection from the passage D after passing the slit 18a, and an identification means capable of identifying the object coin on the basis of the light intensity pattern by utilizing the fact that the light intensity pattern yielded by the light receiving device 16 corresponds to the object coin surface pattern.
