PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus increasing the speed of image processing in both color and monochromic image modes and having a composite function for processing images at high speeds. SOLUTION: The image data processing unit (IPU 1) has an image processor 33 capable of simultaneously and concurrently inputting and outputting a plurality of image data and simultaneously and concurrently processing the data; and a buffer memory device 32 including a plurality of memory RAMs usable as the line memory of the image data, the memory device 32 including a MEMOCON (Figure. 6) having a separating function for transmitting and receiving the image data between the memory and the image processor and for allocating a series of image data in time series to a plurality of combinations, and a synthesizing function for extracting the plurality of combinations of data in order, to make one combination. The color image forming apparatus (Figure. 3) having a composite function using the image data processing unit and an image data processing method are also disclosed.
