<p>The invention concerns a combined compacting and wrapping machine for compacting material, such as fodder, into a bale and wrapping the bale with a wrapping material, comprising a compaction chamber (10), and compaction means within the chamber (10) to compact material in the chamber (10) into a bale (20). The compaction chamber (10) has a compaction chamber part (11) which is moveable upwardly to expose the compacted bale (20) and wrapping means to wrap the bale with a wrapping material when the compaction chamber part (11) is raised. A support structure (e.g. a 10 column) is provided for the compaction chamber part (11). The support structure comprises two vertically displaceable parts (5, 6), which may be telescopic. A drive means for driving the compaction means (15) within the compaction chamber part (11), comprises a main drive sprocket (70) attached to the top one support structure part (5), and a head sprocket (72) attached to the top of the other support structure part (6) which is upwardly displaceable, vertically relative to the lower part (5). An endless drive chain (71) connects the drive sprocket (70) to the head sprocket (72) for transmitting drive from the drive sprocket (70) to the head sprocket (72). A tensioning pulley (73) is provided around which the drive chain (71) passes, and which is moveable upwardly and downwardly in a substantially vertical path in co-operation with the movement of the moveable part (6) to maintain tension on the drive chain (7). Optionally, the tensioning pulley is slideable on guide means, such as a slide rod (74), attached to the fixed part (5), and the drive chain (71) defines a substantially u-shaped path about the tensioning pulley (73), and as the moveable part (6) is raised the tensioning pulley is caused to move upwardly a similar distance.</p> |
