The starter and engine ignition are controlled by a three-position switch (11). The first position (18) gives 'Engine OFF'. The second position (19) gives 'Ignition ON'. The third position (20) gives 'Starter ON'. In the second position the engine control circuit (14) is switched on and a solenoid switch (16) is energized to switch on the electric fuel pump (13). The control circuit is connected to the starter switch by two data lines (17,17a). In the third position the starter switch energizes the starter solenoid switch to operate the starter motor (12). Independent claims are made for: (i) a method of starting an combustion engine; (ii) a computer program.
