The method involves arranging individual STM1 signals in frames consisting of overhead data with an identity word and useful data, multiplexing the signals in the individual main channels onto a faster serial communications channel and demultiplexing at the receiver end. The SMT1 signals of the relevant main channels are bit-wise multiplexed with a potential time offset with respect to each other. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: an electronic component, preferably an ASIC, FBGA, semi- or fully-customer specific component, with a circuit core for communicating with other components.
