The invention relates to a method for the discovery of pharmacologically active agents which influence the function of nerve cells, comprising the following steps: (a) bringing a sample containing insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP-5) or an active part thereof into contact with at least one potential agent and (b) determining the activity of IGFBP-5 in the sample.
