Operating device has a touch sensitive input field (4) that is touched using an operator's finger or other input object in order to trigger input of a process command. A reporting device (7) is provided that acknowledges a directly or indirectly sensed movement on the input field in a haptic or mechanical manner as soon as input is recognized as such. Thus the input screen is made to vibrate as soon as a command has been successfully input. The invention also relates to use of the inventive operating device with a mobile phone, hand-held computer, motor vehicle navigation device, computer or multimedia device.
