LIGHTWEIGHT GYPSUM WALLBOARD AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME

A method of preparation and use of lightweight, high-strength gypsum wallboard, as well as a core composition suitable for use therein, are disclosed. The core composition includes a slurry of calcium sulfate hemihydrate (stucco), water, acid-modified starch, and a starch cross-linking agent, having a pH of about 9 to about 12. The composition and method provide a wallboard having a lower density than conventional wallboard, and with equivalent or better strength characteristics than conventional wallboard.
